Summary Record Of The Debate

In: Economic Consequences of the Size of Nations

Abstract

Professor Robinson, as chairman of the programme committee, introduced the programme of the Round Table. He felt that the subject needed little apology since it was of great immediate importance at a time when many nations were considering economic integration, common markets, and free trade areas. We were to discuss the validity of arguments in favour of measures to increase the effective size of nations, and it was important to examine these. What were the real economic advantages of a large nation? There was very little economic literature on the subject, and in the immediate post-war period many arguments of very doubtful validity had been used to justify European economic integration. The connection, if any, between size and wealth needed to be demonstrated rather more rigidly.
