Abstract

The rise in prices in the 16th century took place after an inflationary period during which, in the most economically advanced parts of Europe, the public had learned to deal with its consequences. Nevertheless, the steep rise in prices had during certain periods of the 16th century an enormous effect on the public, and stimulated interest in its causes and repercussions. In countries where there was no precedent to indicate the effects of inflation the experience (compared to that in periods when prices remained stable over long periods of time) caused an understandable proliferation of theories on the subject.
