Abstract

Women like myself have overcome many barriers to occupy spaces in judiciaries around the world. Most have overcome social and economic challenges to acquire the good and substantial education that they possess. Many, even having risen to these positions, contend with discrimination, both formal and informal. Yet their histories, which could inspire other young women in the legal profession to serve as judges, remain unrecorded and untold. This chapter is a historical account of my efforts to reach the apex of the judiciary of Kenya as the country’s first female deputy chief justice and vice president of the Supreme Court after the promulgation of the 2010 constitution, which opened spaces for women to aspire and excel. It is a story of joy, tears, and resilience.
