Abstract

In the winter of 2018, millions of women filled the streets of various cities of Argentine cities to demand the legalization of abortion under the hashtag #QueSeaLey [MakeItLaw]. Even when the bill was rejected by the Senate after receiving approval in the House of Representatives, the mobilization of those days marked a milestone for Latin American politics. I am here interested in examining the mode in which the role of this on and off line activism managed to constitute a massive and intersectional collective where the contact with the past proved key. And it proved itself so in three senses: by the mode in which it established intergenerational connections, by the challenge to the progressive narrative of the movement, and by the way in which it linked the current feminist activism with the struggles and resistance movements against the State Terrorism executed in the framework of the last Argentine military dictatorship (1976–83).
