Abstract

The focus of the paper is on the strategic changes experienced by the small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) along their lifecycle, particularly small size service firms. In the theory framework of organization lifecycle (and related lifecycle concepts), the study explores the case of a Ro-manian small business that provides services for the local market. The firm belongs to an international group with global activity (one of the world’s leading companies providing energy management services for greater energy efficiency in buildings). This paper analyses the strategic changes as well as the driving factors – across stages and growth phases of the organ-ization lifecycle, over more than a decade (2005 – to-date). The impact of the changes in ownership structure at the group level is underlined. The management implications are underlined, and recom-mendations – as lessons learnt – are useful for theorists and practitioners alike: top managers and company strategists, members of the administration boards; entrepreneurs and business owners. Limitations and future research paths are presented as well.
