Abstract

In public discourse, there is a lively discussion about the ethics of markets and the ethics of business firms. This article approaches the debate from the perspective of an economic theory of morality. It gives answers to typical questions frequently asked by journalists. In doing so, the article argues that many of these questions implicitly rest on profound misunderstandings and are therefore highly misleading: There is a type of journalism that does not clarify or deconstruct popular misconceptions about the working properties of markets and business. Rather, unintentionally, journalists often perpetuate exactly those prejudices that hamstring constructive discourse. Thus, there is a pronounced need for learning.
