Abstract

Within the last 25 years, the US-GDP growth exceeded the German one almost every year. Apparently, the US economy had a better ability to adjust to the new conditions coming up with the process of global-isation. The reason for that is the high propensity to become self-employed in the US. Therefore, new markets can be developed quickly and new technologies are adopted early. For Germany in fact there are empirical findings which show a positive correlation between the amount of self-employed and the GDP growth. But there are several indicators, e.g. the quantity of unused patents, which suggest that the num-ber of self-employed in Germany is inefficiently low. To reduce the German growth lag compared to the US, Germany needs more entrepreneurial activity. This aim can be reached by reducing red tape, by de-regulation and more efficient ways to protect employees against dismissals, as well as by reducing capital market imperfections and an improved entrepreneurial education.
