Fernsehgelder und sportliche Performance

Abstract

In many professional team sports leagues the revenues generated from the sale of broadcasting rights are shared more or less equally among the teams in that league. This redistribution is justified by the need to maintain or imporve 'competitive balance'. Using a large data set from 12 major European soccer leagues and covering a period of twenty-five years (1976-2000), I compare the performance of recently promoted teams in leagues where revenues are evenly distributed and in leagues where every team sells the broadcasting rights for its home matches itself (and keeps the money). I find that a more or less equalredistribution of the means earned through the collective sale of broadcasting rights leaves the survival probabilities of recently promoted teams totally unaffected. This is surprising insofar as the newcomers are the main beneficiaries of any redistribution.(Original text only available in german language)
