Globalisierte Spielermärkte: Ein Problem für den deutschen Profifussball?

Abstract

This paper discusses the consequences of the verdict in the Bosman case, which enabled the European soccer clubs to employ and deploy as many players from the other EU member states as they want. This ruling has since been feared by the representatives of the mayor European leagues to induce problems concerning the integration of new talents into the club's first teams. In particular, it is claimed thta this would hurt the quality of their national teams. Sorting the nations according to the results of their clubs in the European club championships, and then comparing the success of their national teams in European and World Championships, we show this claim is true. But not only do we prove that national championships are getting exciting as smaller nations have more expierenced players in the top leagues now and thus can keep up with the top nations, we also find evidence that Germany will gain in this process because having no top league anymore.(Original text only available in german language)
