Abstract

Una de las primeras formas de autodefensa campesina desarrolladas en Chota fueron las guardias urbanas y rurales, que aparecieron en 1876 y duraron hasta 1930, periodo caracterizado por la insurgencia militar de las montoneras y el bandolerismo (Pérez Mundaca 1996). Sin embargo, se debe tomar en cuenta que, durante ese periodo, se desarrollaron, en la escena política y social, una serie de acontecimientos que luego influirían en los cambios que este tipo de organización para la autodefensa campesina fue experimentando en su conformación.
