Landing the ‘big fish’

Abstract

All academic researchers dream of landing a ‘big fish’ in terms of research funding and projects. Some actively plan for this to occur, which is wise. In this final chapter, tips are offered for how to win a major research grant or contract, including the importance of building networks and connections, with a number of examples. The most important research projects might have large budgets, but this chapter also explains that even small and moderate budgets can produce research that has significant societal impact, particularly in the humanities, arts, and social science (HASS) disciplines. This chapter summarizes how becoming a successful academic researcher is a journey to be carefully planned.
