Abstract

The aphorism ‘publish or perish’ remains true in academic research today. This chapter explains the different types of academic research outputs including research-based creative works as well as reports of laboratory or field experiments, and academic journal articles, books, book chapters, and conference papers. It advises researchers to consult with their supervisors or Research Office on the priorities of their discipline-for example, conference papers are important in some disciplines but not in others. It gives tips on how to establish a publishing ‘pipeline’ necessary to build a successful academic research career and deal with reviewers even when they are harsh, and explains open-source publishing. It also unpacks the jargon of journal and author impact factors such as researchers’ h-index, altmetrics, and ultimately writing a successful book proposal.
