Abstract

This major chapter presents vignettes and summaries of 20 research projects undertaken by the author with insights into how they were negotiated in the first instance, and then how they were conducted, with dozens of practical tips. It takes readers behind the scenes to see engagement in action, including building international connections and profile. While the author works in the social sciences, many of the lessons apply to all disciplines. The examples of building connections, winning research funding, and conducting field research are first-hand, factual accounts told ‘warts and all’ including coping with long-distance travel, time away from home, dealing with journal editors and publishers, and balancing ambition and hard work with wellbeing and personal life. While this chapter is lengthy, the 20 research projects are discussed together in sequence because they flow from one to the next and overlap and interconnect, illustrating the evolution and development of a research career.
