Rapid development of industrial clusters in Asia

Abstract

I postulated in Chapter 3 that the key to the successful development of an industrial cluster is multifaceted innovation, consisting of the improvement of the quality of products, marketing, quality control, enterprise management, and contractual relationships with dependable input suppliers. The purpose of this chapter is to test the validity of this hypothesis by undertaking case studies of the machine tool industry in Taiwan, the low-voltage electric appliance industry and motorcycle industry in China and the apparel industry in Bangladesh. While it is true that these four cases are particularly supportive of the multifaceted innovation hypothesis, I would like to make it clear that other cases shown in Table 3.1, which are not discussed in this book, are also supportive.
