Abstract

The major purpose of this chapter is to demonstrate that a key to the success of a Green Revolution in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA is to disseminate improved cultivation practices in addition to the adoption of improved varieties and the application of inorganic fertilizer. Although this is true for both rice and maize, the natures of improved cultivation practices for the two crops are substantially different. They are fairly well established for rice, and the training of rice farmers through an extension program is a recommended strategy for a rice Green Revolution. The improved varieties and cultivation practices in maize farming, however, are location-specific, and the optimum mix of a variety of improved cultivation practices, modern varieties and inorganic fertilizer application is unclear. Thus, the implementation of adaptive research is a prerequisite for a maize Green Revolution in SSA.
