SDG mapping

Abstract

The SBC programme was the first global programme of its kind to focus on circular built environments and led the research on circular built environments internationally. This chapter presents the primary research undertaken by the SBC programme on mapping against the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While there is fragmented research, not all are linked with the SDGs. It also discusses the various tools required to interlink with SDGs such as green building rating systems and life cycle assessments and how these contribute to achieving the SDGs. Building materials used in construction also plays a key role in achieving a circular built environment. The SBC programme conducted the SDG mapping process through the development and use of a scalable assessment framework for circular economy of the buildings and construction sector to understand the priorities for different regions. The results showed that the SDGs also support other UN related programmes such as the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and concerted efforts were made towards achieving holistic social, economic and environmental sustainability. A number of the SDGs are relevant for SBC across the three levels: goals, targets, and indicators. Four goals are core for circular built environments: SDG9, SDG11, SDG12, and SDG13. Diving deeper for the Global South, the following SDGs are highlighted: SDG6, SDG7, SDG8, SDG9, SDG11, SDG12 and SDG17. The outputs and outcomes of this research sets the seeds for promoting a common basis for engagement of the buildings and construction sector whilst supporting circular built environments.
