Abstract

People all around the world are facing severe challenges as a result of the cost of living crisis. The consequences of the crisis include its adverse effects on poverty (including child poverty), homelessness, food insecurity, indebtedness and health. It has also led to an increase in the number of women resorting or returning to prostitution, and it has changed consumer behaviour. The incidence of crime has risen as a result of the crisis, and so has the incidence of suicide, drug abuse, domestic abuse and divorce. Responses to the crisis differ across countries but they fall under two categories: (i) measures taken to help people financially to overcome the difficulties associated with the rising cost of living, and (ii) measures taken to bring inflation under control.
