Fostering an entrepreneurial mindset in diverse university cohorts: a case study of Summer Lab

Abstract

This chapter presents an in-depth examination of the University of Auckland’s Summer Lab, a four-week co-curricular program designed to nurture an entrepreneurial mindset among students. Summer Lab engages individuals who do not traditionally view themselves as entrepreneurs, focusing on problem-solving and societal impact. Utilizing pre- and post-program entrepreneurial mindset surveys, the research demonstrates the program’s efficacy in fostering key entrepreneurial dimensions such as creativity, need for achievement, self-efficacy, and proactivity. Despite fluctuations in certain dimensions, the overall trend reveals positive shifts. The chapter also details the program’s evolution, including adaptations for online delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic and its strategic marketing approach to attract a diverse participant cohort. Program outcomes, including participant demographics and venture success stories, underscore the positive impact of Summer Lab. The study concludes with confidence in the program’s continued growth and contribution to the university’s and the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship’s overarching objectives.
