Abstract

Governance requires knowing and organizing. Knowledge can take many forms and includes ideas and stories about the community, about what is desired and feared, and about desirable organization and governance. The presence of a diversity of knowledges requires selection and integration. In this chapter, we deploy the concepts of narrative and discourse to analyse the roles of diverse knowledges in governance. We discuss the importance of ideologies and other meta-narratives and lean on semiotics to further investigate the linking and production of knowledge. Knowledge plays a decisive role in community strategy, and careful attention to what kinds of knowledge are entrenched, missing or dismissed in a community will be useful in understanding possibilities to move forward.
