Reflections from a postcolonial experience in developing research

Abstract

In this chapter, I discuss my journey to find my voice as a researcher. I start the chapter by outlining my experience as an undergraduate student in Latin America and then as a PhD student in Europe. Based on that description, I discuss the context and its influence on shaping research and the researcher’s voice. I claim that the neglect of multiple political, historical and geographical voices in the management literature creates decontextualised research. The frameworks suggested by scholars in developed countries do not always fit the context of emerging economies, perpetuating colonialism and constraining researchers from finding their voice. I finally outline the importance of using different paradigms to problematise research and contextualisation and to find a voice while standing out rather than fitting in. I conclude the chapter by suggesting that as researchers, we need to be more open to paradigmatic discussion and the use of alternative methodologies, and understand the impact of our subjectivity as researchers.
