Abstract

As contexts of heightened dynamism and change, emerging markets offer uniquely fecund settings for process research in management and organisation studies. Theorising that directly taps into the temporal dynamics of emerging markets can help us move away from clichés about emerging markets in management research, and also shed new light on core theoretical concerns. In this chapter, I propose that a purposive orientation towards longitudinal qualitative data and an adroit use of temporal bracketing in analysing such data can help us pursue this objective. Temporal bracketing, or slicing the timespan of the study into sequential ‘cases’ and then comparing theoretical mechanisms across these slices, enables theoretical replication in unusual or hard-to-access settings. This chapter provides a selective review of the use of temporal bracketing in management literature and shares a set of recommendations on the conduct of qualitative research using temporal bracketing.
