Abstract

This concluding chapter offers space for discussing the main outcomes of the analysis and connecting them with the grand debates existing in the literature. Differentiated integration, as a scholarly concept as well as a real political phenomenon ‘on the ground’, has gained increasing attention both in academic reflection and in the public discourse. Despite the growing body of scholarly analyses, DI constantly requires more and more scientific exploration allowing for its full understanding and explanation. This concluding chapter summarizes the analysis that contributes to identifying DI’s sources and major characteristics, as well as showing the basic mechanisms of differentiated integration. It also points to its dynamics, potential consequences, and side effects in the context of the overlapping crises.
