Abstract

This chapter explores the evolving field of comparative legal studies, advocating a broader approach to comparative study than that often found in much of existing work in the field of comparative law. Emphasizing the value of an interdisciplinary approach, it examines global legal changes and their impact on legal systems and cultures, giving particular attention to the importance of empirical research, conceptual innovation, thinking more innovatively about rules and doctrine, the place of dispute processes, and the development of comparative international law. The chapter argues for the recognition of comparative legal studies as a vital perspective for understanding and addressing these and other contemporary legal challenges. It also underscores the importance of comparative legal studies for legal education and policymaking, highlighting its potential in fostering a globally conscious and more just and inclusive legal landscape.
