Abstract

This research is framed within the ongoing circular economy (CE) transition that is gaining attention worldwide. The chapter traces the evolution of the concept, adding insights about the main features and limitations of the school of thought that since its origins has influenced the concept and its practical and theoretical framework. The current development of the CE worldwide is also explored by presenting some data on the circularity of the global economy and that of the European Union, one of the geographical areas highly committed to the transition to the CE, and thus considered a CE champion in the process. Some success stories in CE transition are highlighted along with the opportunities for regions and cities through the adoption of the CE and the main barriers and drivers. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the role of regions and cities in the shift to the CE and the need to strengthen research efforts to understand their CE initiatives in order to provide useful feedback for policymakers.
