The relational turn in student engagement

Abstract

We situate this chapter in relational concepts of student engagement that evoke notions of intersubjective relationships. These in turn shape how students see themselves as learners and participants in the social dynamics of educational institutions. We argue that the pandemic accelerated a relational turn in student engagement discourse and practices, particularly within the influence of teaching staff (academics/faculty) responsible for curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment design and implementation. However, while relational notions of student engagement were central and centred, understanding how to foster such engagement in online environments was peripheral. We advocate for approaches that co-develop engagement and learning design theories that intersect with professional development opportunities to upskill and reskill tertiary teaching staff so they enact relational theories of engagement into their practices.
