Abstract

This study investigates the relationships between higher education students’ achievement goals and real-time class engagement in Zoom sessions. A survey was administered to 101 participants from six Korean universities during the first semester of 2020. Through cluster analysis, ANOVA, and post-hoc tests, the study revealed a significant difference in the relationship between achievement goal orientations and class engagement, encompassing behavioural, cognitive, emotional, and agentic aspects. Individuals with high mastery and performance approach goal orientations demonstrated higher levels of emotional, cognitive, and agentic engagement compared to those with performance avoidance goal orientations. These findings offer valuable insights for educational practitioners, guiding the development of strategies to enhance student engagement in online learning environments.
