Abstract

This introductory chapter outlines the story behind this book - the journey that led us (Cathy and Sarah) to undertake the role of editors of this Research Handbook on Student Engagement in Higher Education. Some history of the evolution of understandings of student engagement is included for context, followed by an overview of the book itself, in terms of how it is organised, why the different sections have been included, their importance and the significance of the chapters within them. An introduction to each of the chapters is provided within the context of the three parts in which they appear. This chapter acknowledges the contributing authors who have made it possible to present here a comprehensive overview of the current state of student engagement in higher education from a global perspective, along with case studies of practical ways in which student engagement may be enhanced.
