Abstract

Sacred spaces and holy texts, we examine the holy writings of religions and how the times and places that might be sacred or holy became so, and how businesses might accommodate those realities. Some places are holy from the start, some grow in stature associated with miraculous events and some are pop-up, often related to a specific tragedy. We introduce the idea of “thin spaces” and note when time rather than space is spiritual. We also note the role of art and comedy in the sacred where religious comment and perceptions of blasphemy can collide. We applaud efforts that businesses have helpfully provided religious space for silence, for reflection and meditation, and how this can encourage diversity and understanding in building what has been termed as “spiritual capital” in a business.
