Abstract

The likelihood that food security goals can be met in 2050 is explored. The major pitfalls are outlined and the experiences to date set out, including the resiliency of agri-food chains during the COVID-19 pandemic. The conclusion is that the problems associated with ‘inadequate incomes’ will not be solved by 2050. Climate change will increase the likelihood of famines and food price shocks but, for the most part, agri-food supply chains will be able to make food available. The crucial piece with be whether agricultural productivity will continue to increase at a pace that outpaces the increase in global population.
