Science for tomorrow - the long lags in productivity enhancement

Abstract

Increases in agricultural productivity do not arrive like ‘manna from heaven’ - they are the result of increasingly sophisticated scientific advances. They take time to come to fruition. The lag from a scientific discovery until its benefits are fully diffused in the economy is upwards of a quarter-century. That means that investments today will not provide full benefits until 2050. There is well-documented underinvestment, both public and private, in agricultural research and development. As a result, future global food security is not assured.
