Abstract

What are the distinctive features of social democratic, liberal, corporatist and proto-corporatist regimes? In this chapter we describe key features of the Swedish social democratic regime, the American liberal regime, the German corporatist regime and the Italian proto-corporatist regime. The focus is on political and policy values/priorities, welfare state programs, the labour market and industrial relations. The first part of the chapter considers alternative classifications of Western regimes to the one proposed by Esping-Andersen: the Varieties of Capitalism (VoC) classficication and the growth models classification.
