Protecting endangered species against mass extinction

Abstract

The first major issue of environmental and nature protection that this book addresses is protecting endangered species and preventing another mass extinction. According to the Red List, about 30% of all species on the planet are threatened to extinction while over 2,300 species are listed as an endangered species in the USA. The policy instruments that are currently pursued are a basket of endangered species approach on the one hand and a designating-preservation-areas approach for biodiversity on the other. Economists on the other hand clarify the cost or the sacrifice humans have to make for pursuing these policies. The Buddha’s advice is expressed in his first moral conduct prescribed to his followers: Do not kill or promote killing other sentient beings. Sentient beings are a consciousness possessor, therefore, include animal beings. Buddhists have placed an emphasis in cultivating a way of life in which humans and other sentient beings can coexist.
