A basket of Buddhist instruments for protecting nature

Abstract

This second chapter on Buddhism introduces the 11 Buddhist instruments that are pertinent to the environmental, natural, and conservation efforts of today. These instruments are sometimes doctrines, other times tales, and still other times metaphors and similes. They are (1) a religion of trees; (2) Jataka stories when Buddha was a great monkey; (3) the king of snakes; (4) a religion of lotus flowers; (5) dependent arisings and interdependent world; (6) karma and consequence and cause and effect; (7) perfection of wisdom told through a frightened rabbit; (8) Indra’s net; (9) Buddha nature; (10) the Bodhisattva’s way of life; (11) a path of reasoning. These instruments reveal how Buddhist thoughts have perceived and interacted with the natural world, animal beings, flowers, plants, the external world, the inner world, and the universes.
