Abstract

Many staff who teach feel that they are working in an environment that is ‘data-rich, but information-poor.’ We are all aware of the power of data as a resource but can feel that we lack the expertise to derive meaningful value from the data that is available. However, with a very basic understanding of commonly available tools such as spreadsheets and the reports available in our VLEs, staff who teach can become empowered with a depth of understanding of what is happening in classrooms and in students’ online activity that can enrich and inform their practice in an evidence-based way. This chapter explores the field of learning analytics, which applies the principles of data analytics to the vast array of data held in institutional databases, with a view to supporting students’ success and understanding and deepening their learning.
