Abstract

This chapter explores different conceptions of care in pedagogy, with an emphasis on the multidimensional nature of care, and its intersections with systems, and how this influences how care and equity are inextricably entangled in complex ways. The chapter introduces the Equity/Care matrix, and practical models for care such as Intentionally Equitable Hospitality, Compassionate Learning Design, and the Roumy Cheese analogy. The chapter builds on the care ethics work of Nel Noddings, critical notions of democratic care by Joan Tronto, and engaged pedagogy of bell hooks. It also draws upon the Emergent Strategy work of adrienne maree brown. I include examples from my own personal, teaching, institutional and public practices to illustrate how care and equity can be enacted in context.
