In: How to Use Digital Learning with Confidence and Creativity

Abstract

Open educational practices (OEP) encompass the creation and use of open educational resources (OER) as well as innovative approaches to teaching and learning that avail of the affordances of open licensing and provide learners with greater agency. The benefits of OEP include significant cost savings and better educational outcomes for learners, greater pedagogical flexibility for educators, as well as support for more inclusive and equitable learning environments. As a result, a growing number of institutions worldwide have developed policies, procedures, and practices that support OEP. However, despite the strong connection between open education and the promise of equal access to education in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopting OEP does not necessarily serve social justice and doing so requires intention and care on the part of educators.
