Abstract

Modes of learning are the variety of ways students can engage in their learning. In its simplest form students can choose a course that is either in-person on campus or online learning at a distance. Developments in technology have provided new opportunities for digital learning, enabling a combination or even fusion of modes, for example blended learning, Hybrid learning and HyFlex learning. Learning may take place synchronously in real time or asynchronously when the student chooses to learn. In recent years, the terms used to describe these different modes of learning have been used interchangeably causing confusion and leading to misunderstandings of their intended meaning. This chapter aims to untangle the jargon and provide clear explanations for the terminology, as well as guidance for tutors adopting the different modes.
