Abstract

Many universities and colleges aspire to develop more digitally rich courses to meet students’ rising expectations for engaging and flexible learning experiences. Most mainstream faculty, however, lack the design expertise and development time necessary to remodel their programmes. Traditional programme redesign processes, while effective, usually demand too much time and support to be truly scalable. To address this issue, University College London (UCL) created ABC Learning Design, a high-energy, hands-on learning design workshop based on rapid prototyping. In just 90 minutes, teaching teams collaborate to create a visual storyboard sequencing the learning activities required to meet the course’s outcomes. Digital modes, assessment strategies and institutional policies can also be integrated. ABC has been adopted and adapted by many institutions across the UK, Europe and elsewhere, supported by a learning design and staff development Toolkit, including guides for localising, training and cascading the ABC LD method.
