Abstract

The metaverse concept has not only ignited the imaginations of technology enthusiasts but has also caught the attention of industry giants. This is particularly notable as prominent players in the big tech sector have played a pivotal role in popularising and advancing the metaverse idea. It is worth noting that while the metaverse is still a work in progress, the influential involvement of big tech has significantly contributed to its widespread recognition. This chapter delves into the metaverse, discussing its growth, technological underpinnings and varied applications. It concludes by posing thought-provoking questions for educators, encouraging them to assess the metaverse’s potential as a transformative educational tool amid opportunities and challenges.
