Multidirectional knowledge transfer in various technology assessment practices

Abstract

This chapter explores the multidirectionality of knowledge transfer in the realm of technology assessment. Focusing on the dynamic exchange of insights and information, the chapter looks at how knowledge flows not only from experts to the public but also in the reverse direction, challenging traditional hierarchies. It examines the multidirectional communication between TA practitioners, policymakers and the wider society. We reflect on the purposes of knowledge transfer activities that arise from different TA practices, namely: (1) aligning research and development with societal needs; (2) informing political debates and shaping policies for technology governance; and (3) (in)forming public opinion and democratising the development of science and technology. The chapter underscores the importance of recognising the diversity of methods, actors and outcomes of knowledge transfer in TA practices. This analysis contributes to the evolving discourse on the democratisation of knowledge transfer in TA, emphasising the need for nuanced approaches that accommodate the various stakeholders involved in shaping our technological future.
