Abstract

Advising in interdisciplinary degree programs demands a knowledge level (in terms of awareness of the university’s curriculum) and aptitude (in terms of advisor experience and professional practice) that far exceed academic advising in other programs because of the inherent complexity and flexibility found in most undergraduate interdisciplinary degree programs. This chapter will provide an overview of what constitutes modern professional academic advising, including international standards and codes of practice for advising; consider the current best practices for undergraduate academic advising; consider how these best practices cohere and conflict with working with Interdisciplinary Studies (IS) students; and discuss the current professional interdisciplinary academic advising at Miami University for the Bachelor of Integrative Studies (BIS).
