Addressing perspectives with the Toolbox dialogue method

Abstract

Crossdisciplinary researchers must be able to consider different perspectives in combination so that they can bring complex phenomena into focus. Given the importance of this ability for crossdisciplinary research, it is critical that new generations of researchers receive training that enhances it. One approach to enhancing this ability is the Toolbox dialogue method. Developed in the context of an integrative graduate education training program, the Toolbox dialogue method structures reflexivity and perspective seeking/taking in ways that increase proficiency with diverse perspectives. In this chapter, we describe pedagogical applications of this method. We begin by reviewing the literature that addresses how students have been introduced to other perspectives in undergraduate and graduate contexts. Next, we introduce the method, locating it in the context of this literature. Finally, we detail its educational applications, starting with undergraduate applications before turning to graduate applications.
