Abstract

In this chapter I discuss the techniques that have been used to measure the varying characteristics of the neighborhood, and explore the ways in which we have tried to codify, organize, and describe neighborhoods and their variation across the city. While neighborhoods are not simply homogeneous groups of individuals and households, there is considerable similarity in status, race, and ethnicity across neighborhoods. Neighborhoods are clusters of similar people with considerable continuity over time.
