Abstract

The case analyzes the dilemma faced by the CEO of a Paraguayan family business who must decide whether to leave the firm due to irreconcilable differences with his father or to continue running the company while accepting bad corporate practices that affect the business and the family. The moment of maximum tension occurs when the CEO, Demetrio Fernández, wants to dismiss his brother Xavier as a company director, and prevent him from entering the firm’s offices. Demetrio’s reason is that Xavier has withdrawn money from the company to spend it on gambling in the city’s largest casino, but their parents resist firing their errant son. The case raises the question of how to act in extreme situations where the family unit is at stake due to differences in dealing with a family member’s addiction, which negatively affects both the reputation of the family and the future of the business.
