Preventing history from repeating itself: the succession process at De Berg

Abstract

The case describes the intra-family succession process of the Dutch family firm, De Berg Sensor Solutions, founded in 1920. The family firm has already experienced two disruptive successions, resulting in family conflict and the dissolution of relations between family members. The current CEO, Gerard de Berg of the third generation, attempts not to let it happen again. The succession process from the second to the third generation was characterized by conflict between predecessor and successor and rivalry between Gerard and his brother. The case illustrates how lack of communication in the De Berg family about succession intentions led to severe family conflict and explains how Gerard decided to do things differently.
