Abstract

Chapter 1 provides a brief introduction and outline. This book is concerned with two main features of income distribution comparisons. The first five chapters examine a range of technical aspects of inequality measurement, properties of inequality measures, the role of value judgements, and the decomposition of inequality changes into component contributions. These involve what may be called ‘static’ comparisons. However, individual incomes vary over time, so that changes in the distribution of annual incomes may give a misleading indication of inequality. The next five chapters are concerned with ‘dynamic’ aspects of income distribution comparisons. Emphasis is given to the use of longitudinal information to illustrate and measure the characteristics of the mobility process, and its effect on inequality and movements in and out of poverty.
