Abstract

Islam has played a vital role in harnessing democracy, education, and peaceful coexistence in Ghana. Muslim philanthropy in Ghana is informal, with both horizontal and vertical dimensions. It is rooted in indigenous support systems and collaboration with international agencies or NGOs. It focuses on Islamic propagation and poverty alleviation via redistribution of wealth to attain spiritual and socio-economic upliftment of Muslims... Some of the interventions from Muslim philanthropy include the construction of mosques schools, orphanages, libraries, water points, and health posts. The Zakat Fund is a prominent vertical Muslim philanthropy in Ghana. It is used to provide social services to the needy, including scholarships, agricultural services, and activism against gender-based violence. One of the challenges of Muslim NGOs is over-dependency on transnational NGOs and governments from the Gulf States. This dependency limits their effectiveness and sustainability.
