What is Muslim philanthropy?

Abstract

The word “philanthropy” doesn’t exist within many theological and religious foundational texts or cultures. However, many cultures and religions include practices that may fit within modern definitions of philanthropy but use different words to describe these practices. This chapter explores the modern definition of philanthropy, and critiques definitions that emphasize the scientific philanthropy movement’s influenced definitions of philanthropy. The chapter then examines Islamic charitable and philanthropic actions in an attempt to broaden the definition of philanthropy.
