Abstract

China is one of the largest Muslim-minority countries in the world. This chapter provides an overview of Muslim philanthropy in the sociopolitical context of China. After an introduction of Chinese Muslim communities, including subgroups of Muslims, their geographic distribution, socio-demographic characteristics, and religious sects, the chapter discusses the relationship between Islam and the state and how the relationship has evolved through different periods of support and suppression. The chapter also reviews recent public policies and regulations affecting Muslim philanthropy as well as the factors shaping the overall growth of philanthropy in the country. Additionally, it discusses the nature and extent of Muslim philanthropy in China, including Muslim philanthropic tradition, the types of giving, examples of Islamic institutions and their charitable work, causes that Muslims support, and so on. The chapter concludes with a discussion of future research that will advance our knowledge of Muslim philanthropy in China.
