Abstract

Muslim philanthropy in India has a very rich history and has evolved to address local, national, and international needs. India’s philanthropic tradition is also varied, combining thousands of years of cultural, religious, and ethnic intermingling. Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Jain, Buddhist, Zoroastrian, and other religious traditions have shaped the Indian way of life and attitudes concerning charity and philanthropy. This chapter offers an overview of Muslim philanthropy in India through an examination of Waqf, sadaqa, and zakat in India. In addition, this paper will offer some insights into the changing nature of Muslim giving and argue, based on existing research, that there is an emerging reform agenda that seeks to address the perceived (and real) shortcomings in the Muslim community and Indian society at large.
